As designers, it is always good to take a look around, and size up the competition {well, in the design world that is!}.
Logo design is a business. And in every business, you must know who, and what you are dealing with.
Never be afraid to say you do not know about something, and then dig in, and learn all about it. You want to always be well informed. It never hurts to do that extra little bit of research, and you will only be better off in the end.
There are several things that need to be kept in mind here.
Make sure you know what is up and coming-you do not want to be out of style, old fashioned etc. People are looking for new-for a new business, company, or just a new design to replace an old one. You want to be sure of what is current.
The second thing to remember is that, as I said here, make sure you are bold, and do not be afraid to throw out into the design world the unique, different, something to shake that world a little (just not too much!).
That brings me to my third point. After making sure that you know what is popular, that you are not out of the loop, then that you have something unique, you need to make sure that it says you. If you have something-your own style, trademark, etc.-that people like, something that is being received well, don’t lose it.
Okay, so, I can hear you saying….”But aren’t your last two points opposites? I mean, how can you keep doing things the same, but then try to put out there new, and different things?”.
Good point. Nope. It is not.
They are, in fact, very different.
To have your own style is a good thing, something that makes you stand out from the crowds of designers all around you. However, you do need to make sure that you do not get stuck in the rut of the same design.
In a nutshell, you want to give them a new, unique design, with your own flair added to it. It must be original, but also say “you”.
To sum it up, it always pays to do your research, and know what is “in Vogue”…just always be sure to do it with your own flair!
